Anne Kelly from Australia is the chair of the AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) of MAGAD (The Montessori Advisory Group for Ageing and Dementia). She has been in the field of ageing and long-term care for over 30 years. She has provided the guidance and training around the world in the last ten years. She is an expert and leader in the field of Montessori in aged care at the international level.

Montessori for Ageing and Dementia is an innovative, evidence-based model of care. This method focuses on the elderly, and design activities, schedules work, and routine tasks based on individual needs, interests, skills, and abilities, and it provides a prepared environment that is expected to make up for the impairment of the elderly's cognitive or physical function, promote them to perform their remaining functions, enhance their ability to care for others and others, and continue their meaningful activities.

This workshop expects students to have a preliminary understanding of the concept of "The Montessori for Ageing and Dementia", understand the important core concepts and principles of this method, and continue to pay attention to related issues and activities in the future.

Participants will be able to

  • Link the needs, interests, skills and abilities of people living with dementia to the Montessori goals and objectives.

  • Describe the Montessori method for dementia model and explain why this is a useful technique for elders and those living with dementia.

  • Describe the Montessori philosophy as well as the basic Montessori principles as they relate to Aged Care.

  • Use the Montessori principles for Aged Care, to develop a Montessori prepared environment, including programming and activities for individuals and groups.

  • Assess current environmental strategies and know how to modify these to develop a Montessori prepared environment for Aged Care

  • Completion of this workshop is a prerequisite for attaining the AMI Montessori for Ageing and Dementia practitioner certification*.


*All participants in the 3-Day workshop will have the option of completing the practitioner certification.

    • The practitioner certification involves around 40 hours self-paced study, including the completion of two case studies in aged and/or dementia care settings. All work is submitted electronically for assessment.

    • A successful assessment will result in the award of the AMI Montessori for Ageing and Dementia Practitioner Certification.

    • There is an additional fee of A$300 per person associated with the Certification process for marking and processing

Anne Kelly is a registered nurse and a subject matter expert on the application of Montessori principles for Aged Care and Dementia. She is currently the Managing Director of Montessori Consulting Australia. Anne Kelly, also holds qualifications in Post Graduate Dementia Management, Assessment and Workplace Training and Dementia Care Mapping. She has worked extensively in aged and dementia care both residential and community for the past 38 years and she is the current chair of the Association of Montessori Internationale, Montessori for Ageing and Dementia Advisory Group.

Her work takes her across Australia and the world, providing training, mentoring and consultation to care communities developing Montessori Environments.

Anne is considered an Australian and world leader in Montessori Methods for aged care and dementia. She published her first book in 2017, Forgetfulness, Feelings and Farnarkling, a book that examines where aged care has come from, where we are now and where we need to be.
